The U.S. Army's Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) is the world leader in programs to store, treat, and dispose of chemical weapons safely and effectively. The agency developed and used technologies to safely store and eliminate chemical weapons at seven stockpile sites while protecting the public, its workers and the environment. CMA also has the storage mission at the Nation's final two stockpile sites. CMA was created to incorporate the former Program Manager for Chemical Demilitarization and portions of the U.S. Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command into one agency. This streamlines operations and allows for greater integration of these programs. More information on the organization is available at About CMA.

Deseret Chemical Depot workers recognized during a celebration hosted by DCD Commander Col. Mark Pomeroy

On April 26, depot workers and community stakeholders came together to celebrate the end of chemical weapons destruction operations at the Deseret Chemical Depot (DCD). A commemorative ceremony was held at DCD to mark this momentous milestone.

Through the dedication of our workers, past and present, a historic day was reached on Jan. 21 as destruction of the nation’s single-largest chemical weapons stockpile—more than 1.1 million munitions containing more than 13,600 tons of chemical agent—was safely completed.

PBCDF Completes Chemical Agent Decontamination

The Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (PBCDF) safely completed the Unventilated Monitoring Tests (UMT) on April 19, 2012, marking the successful completion of a major closure milestone for the facility at Pine Bluff Arsenal.

Chemical weapons disposal operations began at the Arsenal in March 2005 with the GB nerve-agent filled rockets. The second disposal campaign, VX nerve-agent filled rockets, ended February 2008; and the third disposal campaign, VX nerve-agent filled landmines, ended June 2008. Mustard agent-filled ton containers were the fourth and final disposal campaign. Ton container disposal operations began in December 2008 and were completed in November 2010 beginning the closure status.

Save the date for the CMA End of Operations Ceremony

The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) marked the end of its stockpile operations, destroying nearly 90 percent of the United States’ declared chemical agent stockpile. Destroying the stockpile safely and on schedule is a major achievement for CMA and its systems contractors.

A formal ceremony will take place on May 17, 2012, at 2 p.m., at the Chemical Demilitarization Training Facility (CDTF) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (Edgewood Area), Md. The event recognizes this achievement for CMA and the workforce. It is open to Aberdeen Proving Ground’s workforce.

The stockpile is gone, but the work is not over

With the safe destruction of Deseret Chemical Depot’s(DCD’s) stockpile of chemical weapons, closure operations have now moved to the top of the priority list.Although early closure-related activities have been underway for quite some time, these activities were limited until agent operations were complete.

Decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) closure work has begun in the most contaminated areas of the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility (TOCDF) and from there will move into the cleaner areas. Equipment will be disassembled and removed, and then the areas will be decontaminated from floor to ceiling.

Closure operations, including demolition of the TOCDF, are expected to be completed by mid-2014.
